Enterprise-Class Wireless LAN for Anywhere Network Access
The 3Com Wireless LAN Access Point 8250 creates an
enterprise-class wireless LAN supporting up to 253 simultaneous
users. The 8250 Access Point is designed from the ground up as a
modular, upgradeable platform for configuration flexibility and
investment protection. It ships as a single-mode 802.11g 2.4
GHz, 54-Mbps access point with an open interchangeable radio
slot. As your needs grow, you may add 802.11a support in this
access point to optimize performance and user density.
Built-in security, manageability and reliability features make
it ideal for any organization or institution facing increasing
mobile computing needs. To protect communications and sensitive
data on the wireless LAN, the 8250 Access Point offers one of
the most advanced and comprehensive set of authentication and
encryption security capabilities on the market today. Web-based
network management tools make configuration and remote
management of the network painless, while SNMP and 3Com Network
Supervisor support integrates the wireless LAN with your wired
infrastructure. Wi-Fi certification ensures interoperability
with Wi-Fi-certified products from other vendors.
Important: If the access point is used with an external antenna
you must also purchase an antenna cable. For maximum efficiency,
you should use the shortest antenna cable possible. Antenna
cables induce signal loss, which will limit the radiated power
output and range of the access point. Of the options available,
we recommend the 3Com 6-Foot Antenna Cable (see Product
Options).

users move through the network coverage area
- PoE powers the access point over existing Ethernet
cabling for simpler, more flexible installations; no
additional power supply required
- Diversity radio antenna provides excellent performance
and coverage in high multi-path environments such as
offices, warehouses, and other indoor installations
- External antenna options extend the 802.11g wireless
connection range to up to 305 meters (1,000 feet)
- Ships as single mode 802.11g 2.4 GHz, 54-Mbps access
point, upgrades to 802.11g -802.11a dual mode with upgrade
kit
- Supports both 11g and 11b wireless users, preserving
your existing wireless investment
- 40/64-, and 128/154-bit WEP shared key encryption and
advanced WPA AES 256-bit encryption ensure the privacy of
all wireless transmissions
- Dynamic security link automatically assigns
user-specific 128-bit encryption keys for wireless sessions
- 802.1X RADIUS server authentication controls wireless
network access and centralizes user authorization across the
network
- Dynamic session key management and TKIP dynamic key
assignment improves security and simplifies deployment
- MAC address access control lists control access to
network resources
- Client-to-client and uplink filtering block direct
communications between other wireless users associated to
the access points
- Dynamic VLAN assignment, used with RADIUS
authentication, assigns users to an appropriate VLAN,
further protecting access to network resources
- Wireless Infrastructure Device Manager and Wireless LAN
Device Discovery tools let you configure parameters, run
diagnostics, and monitor performance from anywhere on the
network using a web browser
- Support for SNMP, 3Com Network Supervisor and other
standards-based management software ensures seamless
integration with your wired network
- RADIUS accounting support enables billing by usage for
hotspot and other commercial deployments
- Site survey tool works with 3Com enterprise wireless PC
Cards to help you optimize the location and number of access
points for your installation
